Did you know that 54% of teens can't put their phone down? Since social media has grown exponentially and most teens could suffer from internet addiction, most professionals do recognize it as an illness but not a mental illness(Addiction Center). Most tend to ask what internet addiction does and we can divide in three effects like influencing scholastic grades, relationships and poor sleep schedule.
School work and grades is a big part of a teen’s life eventually influencing their own future. In most scenarios internet addiction causes a series of effects like reduced curriculum study, educational drop , anxiety and low moral. A research done by Swansea university of Milan showed most of the effects were increased even more by the use of technology feeling almost empty. They found out that with further research that 285 students had problems with study skills which could influence the effectiveness of studying, motivation, and organizing skills. Most teachers saw even a big difference in loneliness of students which made it harder for them to study. (Internet Use)

Next, using the internet so frequently causes teens to interact less with each other this causes them to shell up. Moreover, a decrease in social skills is that teens don’t know how to react to situations, developing problems could be even in family spending time with parents, study showed that 41% of teens don’t interact with each other even with their parents. Teens don’t even know anymore morals making them less empathetic and it can be confirmed by “Common Sense Census: Media Use by Teens and Tweens” making teens impatient, aggressive and can cause forms of bullying.(PRNewswire)
Lastly but most importantly all this can be linked to a poor sleep schedule varying from time to time teens from 13-18 years old need from 8 to 10 hours of sleep to have well rested minds and bodies so they can tackle the day ahead of them. Most known effects are feeling grumpy or poor work ethic, and other effects could include obesity, especially night texting that stimulates our brain and doesn’t let us sleep, not enough sleep time can alter our bodies and the health of it, risking serious problems in the future(NJ).
In conclusion the internet if not used correctly can cause massive mental and physical changes, not only in our social environment but even in our own health and put it at high risks Even though these are some negative effects it allows teens to socialize and develop multitasking skills.

I really like your blog, it is well structured and addresses some very important internet addiction issues. I really like the fact that you used statistics from a university in Milan to demonstrate the danger of this addiction. To conclude, I also liked the fact that you highlighted a lot of mental and psychological problems that can involve too much use of the telephone.
ReplyDeleteI am part of the 54 % of teens who cannot put their devices down, and I did not think this number was so high. It makes me more confortable to know I am not alone, but I feel like we should work collectively to bring that number down. My sleep schedule has also been suffering lately because of technology, and I agree with your fourth paragraph. i have been feeling grumpy lately.
